Cura Bodrum 2010

Cura Bodrum Residency - June 2010, Bodrum, Turkey
As part of the residency process all the participants practiced a derive of the surrounding area in order to psycho-geographically orientate themselves and gather information about their surroundings.

As I set out I was joined by a street dog I had previously met on the beach, we were happy to be together so I followed the dog and he took me on a tour of the neighbourhood showing me the places that were open to him, the scrubby areas, the lemon groves, good places to shelter from the hot sun, to rest, and to meet other dogs, he generously shared his world with me. As we went on our tour I made actions that were suggested to me by the place and by my thoughts about what it means to know a place, or how we become intimate with a place, its inhabitants, its energies and its atmospheres and how we can be open to its messengers. I also thought about what it is to be an outsider, to not belong, to not speak the language and to be vulnerable. My new friend observed my actions and on occasion joined in. We understood each other well.
